Travel Friendly for Schools
Travel Friendly is a sister programme to Swap One, run by Nelson Tasman Climate Forum to help schools make everyday travel healthier, easier and more sustainable.
Travel Friendly works with schools to encourage students and whānau to walk, cycle, scoot, take public transport, carpool and use other lower-carbon ways of getting to and from school.
The aim is to make these options easier, safer and more enjoyable – while helping young people build healthy travel habits that can last a lifetime.
Every school is different
Travel Friendly works with each school community to understand how students currently travel, what gets in the way and where there are opportunities to make a difference.
Students can help shape the approach, coming up with ideas and activities that make active and sustainable travel more appealing and achievable. This could include school-wide challenges, encouraging more walking and cycling, making better use of public transport or finding ways to reduce congestion around the school gate.
The benefits go beyond reducing emissions. More active and sustainable school travel can mean more movement for young people, less traffic around the school gate, cleaner air and lower travel costs for families.
