What is Swap One?

Swap One is a Nelson Tasman initiative encouraging people, workplaces and schools to make simple changes to the way they travel.

The idea is simple: swap a trip you would otherwise make in a petrol or diesel-fuelled vehicle for a lower-carbon option – walk, cycle, take the eBus, carpool, drive an EV or work from home.

It’s an easy, practical way to do something – save money, get more active and help tackle climate change.

Swap One participants record each swap in the Swap One web app. Their number of swaps, money saved and kilometres travelled are tracked over the six-month programme, with monthly and end-of-programme prizes and awards up for grabs.

Who can take part?

Individuals

Anyone can take part. Swap a petrol or diesel-fuelled trip for a lower-carbon option, log it through Swap One and take part individually or through your workplace.

What counts?

You don’t have to be commuting to or from work to take part. Your Swap One journey could be a trip to the supermarket, dropping the kids off, heading to the gym or visiting a friend.

Walk, cycle, take the eBus, carpool, drive an EV or work from home – if it’s a lower-carbon trip, it counts.

  • 14,000+ trips swapped
  • 110,000 km travelled by lower-carbon transport
  • 25 tonnes estimated carbon emissions avoided
  • Almost 30 workplaces and 400+ people took part.

This year, we’re making it easier for more people to get involved – and putting more focus on celebrating success.

  • Swap One Champions – regular swappers can join our refreshed Champions programme and help inspire lower-carbon travel across the region.
  • More friendly competition – regular leaderboards and swap results will support challenges between businesses and within workplaces.
